- Story Text: Civilians in the town of Gardez, close to where hundreds of U.S.
and Afghan troops are attacking al Qaeda and Taliban forces in
eastern Afghanistan, seem to be unfazed by
the war taking place on their doorstep.
As hundreds of U.S. troop reinforcements loaded with equipment
have attacked caves in eastern Afghanistan, in
the nearest town, Gardez, the population seemed unfazed by the
war on Wednesday (March 6).
The market was open as usual and people were going about
their daily business.
In a separate development the local interim administration
has decided to distribute leaflets in a bid to get local
people to report sightings of al Qaeda members.
"We don't like war we want peace in our country," said
local shopkeeper Sur Gul.
"We are very happy that our American friends are helping us
beat al Qaeda in this region," said another local man Akhtar
Mohamad.
The war, however rages on around the town encircled by
mountains.
One woman doctor however said she felt very close to the
line in Gardez. "The war is taking place in Shahi Kot and the
bombing is not good - everyone is really anxious," said
Mazada.
Troops have been airlifted into mountain battlefields in
eastern Afghanistan, and are prepared for a dangerous lengthy
hunt for diehard al Qaeda and Taliban rebels.
