- Story Text: The most expensive apartment in New York history has
just been sold for a huge $45 million - and the Central Park
building hasn't even been completed yet.
The most expensive apartment in the history of New
York real estate is on the 76th floor of the new AOL Time
Warner building - an imposing two tower glass structure on the
southwest corner of scenic Central Park.
The 76th floor apartment has just been sold for a
whopping $45 million - and it is not even ready yet.
The 80 floor structure is still under construction and
won't be finished for another few months. Then the purchaser
will have to spend at least another $10 million designing the
interior of the 12,500 square foot of space.
"We are thrilled about the history that's been made
this week, we believe it is the largest single residential
transaction in New York's history" said Richard Walgren, a
broker with the Sunshine Group which handled the sale, adding
"it is approximately 45 million dollar transaction and what's
fascinating about it is that this is not a finished apartment,
this is really an empty canvas."
The full floor 76th story apartment will be combined
with a 3,600 square space on the 77th floor to create several
double height rooms. It will have it's own terrace and 360
degree views of Central Park and midtown Manhattan.
The Sunshine Group commissioned several architects to
dream up potential designs, but the purchaser has yet to make
a decision.
It's a big secret as to who has made New York real
estate history. All brokers will say is that he is a publicity
shy British financier.
Walgren said, "Because of privacy - we like to think of
ourselves as Swiss bankers, we protect confidentiality of our
purchasers, as the press has reported the purchaser is a
British resident and really that is all I can say."
This week's deal breaks the previous record by $8 million,
when three years ago a 17,000 square foot Park Avenue
apartment was sold for $37 million.
