- Story Text: U.S. marines training in the Kuwaiti desert are
continuing live fire exercises in preparation for a possible
attack on Iraq.
U.S. marines from the First Marine Expeditionary Unit
(MEF) continued live fire exercises just a few kilometres from
the Iraqi border on Friday (February 7) in preparation for a
possible assault on Iraq.
Tow anti-tank missiles were fired from military vehicles
placed strategically across the desert. Grenade launchers and
12.6 and 0.50 calibre heavy machine guns fired in quick
succession.
With a war on Iraq looming, commanders say doing the
exercise "dry" with no actual ammunition would not be enough.
With thousands of American troops in Kuwait, and more on
their way, Kuwait is likely to be a key launching pad for any
U.S. invasion if Baghdad does not satisfy Washington's demand
that it prove itself free of weapons of mass destruction. The
marines have been deployed in the desert close to the border
along with U.S. army units in preparation.
U.S. President Bush has said repeatedly he is willing to
use force against Saddam, and without the United Nations if
necessary. Many U.S. allies, and critics of Bush in the United
States, say they fear he is looking for any excuse to wage
war.
