- Story Text: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt told a meeting of the Central Committee of the Arab Socialist Union(ASU) in Cairo yesterday (Tuesday, Dec 28) that preparations were under way for war with Israel, but that there was still room for political negotiations aimed at a peaceful settlement to the Middle East crisis.
The Tuesday meeting - the start of which was filmed by VISNEWS cameraman Hassan Dahish - was held in secret, and the declarations were made in the official statement of the ASU after the meeting. The text of the President's speech was published today (Wednesday) in the "Al Ahram" daily.
Also present at the secret meeting of the ASU (Egypt's only political party), were Vice Premier and Minister for Foreign Affairs Mahmoud Riad, who spoke on the political situation; and Marshal Mohammed Sadek, who reported on military developments.
