- Story Text: Pakistani Muslim clerics, close to Afghan's ruling
Taliban, have warned Pakistan against helping Washington to
carry out retaliatory strikes on Afghanistan.
Pakistan's military government tightened security on
Friday (Friday 14) as fears grew the United States may take
retribution against neighbouring Afghanistan for terror
attacks that killed thousands in America.
Pakistan is the main backer of the Taliban movement that
runs most of Afghanistan and which has given a safe haven to
Osama bin Laden, accused of masterminding Tuesday's attacks
that crumpled the World Trade Center Towers and smashed a hole
in the Pentagon.
The tension in Pakistan has been increased by the
predicament of military ruler General Pervez Musharraf, who is
under intense U.S. pressure to assist in the hunt for those
behind the attacks, but knows a large part of his population
is vehemently opposed to aiding an anticipated attack on
Afghanistan.
Pakistani Muslim clerics, close to Afghan's ruling
Taliban, have warned Pakistan against helping Washington to
carry out retaliatory strikes on Afghanistan.
To many, bin Laden is a hero for his anti-Western views.
"Osama bin Laden is the hero. He lives in the hearts of the
people. He doesn't live in Afganistan. He is in each and every
house of Muslims - in the whole Muslim world, no matter where
the Muslim lives," said on Islamabad resident.
Pakistan is one of only three countries which recognise
the Taliban government and, despite denials, is continually
accused of providing military support to the hardline Islamic
movement.
At the public level, religious schools in Pakistan
continue to provide a stream of recruits for the Taliban.
