- Story Text: U.S. warplanes launched fierce strikes on rebel
targets in the western city of Falluja.
U.S. warplanes launched fierce strikes on suspected
rebel targets in the western city of Falluja on Saturday
night (October 16), a Reuters witness said.
He said tanks could be seen moving on a highway just
outside Falluja and were shelling suspected guerrilla
positions.
Iraq's U.S.-backed interim government has warned that
it will launch a major offensive in Falluja if the city
does not
hand over Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his
militant followers.
Falluja representatives and Iraqi insurgents in the
city say they have seen no evidence that Zarqawi is holed
up there.
U.S. warplanes bomb rebel targets in Falluja nearly
every day, hoping to smash Zarqawi's suspected network.
Residents say the strikes kill only civilians.
