- Story Text: Senegal's President Leopold Sedar Senghor, on a visit to New Delhi, has bean presented with India's highest compliment. On Tuesday (May 21), the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi made him the first foreign honorary member of the Indian Academy of Latters.
President Sengher, who is on a nine day official visit to India, was mace a fellow of the Sahitya Academy for his writings and ocetry contributions about Africa. Several thousand of India's top intellectuals were present for the euard ceremony.
Soon after the presentation it was announced that Sensgal and India had aiqned a cultural agreement resulting from discussions between the two countries during President Senghor's visit.
SYNOPSIS: On a personal level, the visit of Senegal's leader, President Leopold Sedar Senghor, was highlighted on Tuesday by the award of India's highest compliment. The President is on a nine day official visit to India and has had far ranging talks with the Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi and other Government officials. Several thousand of India's top intellectuals were in New Delhi to see him become the first foreign honorary member of the Indian Academy of Letters. He received the honour for his writings and poetry about Africa.
Soon after the presentation, it was announced that India and Senegal had signed a cultural agreement. It will cover exchanges in the field of literature, the arts, science, technology, education, radio and the press. Scholarships will also be made available under the scheme. The agreement has immediate effect.
