- Story Text: Taking the lead in the eighth lap and holding it against a determined challenge from World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi, Britain's Jackie Stewart won the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday (3 June) at Monte Carlo.
His victory equalled the late Jim Clark's record of 25 Grand Prix wins. And it narrowed the gap at the top of the world drivers' championship in which Brazil's Fittipali leads Stewart by only four points.
Stewart crossed the finishing line a little more than a second ahead of Fitipaldi.
Ronnie Paterson of Sweden, Francois Cevert of France, and Peter Revson of the United States, finished third, fourth and fifth in the final standings, but the fast pace set by Stewart and Fittipaldi meant they were over one lap behind in the 255 kilometre (158 mile) race.
Paterson's third place win, half a minute behind the leaders, came only after a three-Way battle for third place in front of him had ended in misfortune for all three drivers. Austrian Niki Lauda in a B.R.M., Belgian Jacky Ickx in a Ferrari, and Wilson Fittipaldi in a Brabham were struggling for third, when Lauda's car broke down on the circuit.
Ickx was then third, outstripping Wilson Fittipaldi. But on the 45th lap, he was forced to stop with car trouble. Wilson Fittipaldi (Emerson's brother) had a clear chance at his best ever Formula One placing when his engine gave out, leaving Paterson -- earlier handicapped by pit stops to deal with a power loss -- in third place at the end.
SYNOPSIS: Twenty-five cars roared away from the start at the thirty-first Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday -- watched by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, and thousands of enthusiastic spectators.
The Monte Carlo, one of the most prestigious of the races on the Grand Prix circuit, goes through the streets of Monte Carlo.
As the competitors raced along the seafront at Monte Carlo, three men battled for third place. Austrian Niki Lauda, Belgian Jacky Ickx, and Wilson Fittipaldi of Brazil all went out of the race within sight of the finish line with car trouble.
The winner was Britain's Jackie Stewart. He fought off a fierce challenge from Brazil's Emerson Fittipaldi, the current world champion. Stewart's Tyrell Ford took the lead after the sighth lap, and held it for all the two hundred and fifty-five kilometres race.
Fittipaldi, driving a Lotus, pressed Stewart continuously. Their contest took on the look of a separate race, as they went more than a lap ahead of the rest of the field. But at the end, Stewart was first by just over a second Third place went to Ronnie Paterson on Sweden.
Stewart's twenty-fifth Grand Prix win ties the late Jim Clark's record for Grand Prix victories, and leaves only four points between Stewart and Fittipaldi in the world drivers' championship.
