Summary:December 23 1972 brought the death of the aviation pioneer, the Russian Andrei Tupolev. He was credited with the design of more than 120 aircraft. Despite serving five years hard labour during the Stalin purges, Tupolev worked ceaselessly to keep the Soviet Union in the forefront of aircraft design - notably in the civil field. He produced his first aircraft in 1923 and remained at the drawing board until his death at the age of 84.
