Summary:On December 24 1972 (Christmas Eve) Pope Paul travelled 50 kilometres from Rome to visit 3,000 Italian miners working on a railway tunnel. The 75-year-old Pontiff held a special mass for the miners at the rockface three kilometres into the tunnel. In his sermon, he called the miners 'heroes of work' and said he had visited them to show they were not forgotten.
