Summary:November 4, 1952-Dwight D Eisenhower is elected next President of the United States. He succeeded Harry S Truman - arguably America's most effective post-war leader. An almost unknown senator, Truman was Vice President when Roosevelt suddenly died in 1945. With the war against Japan still raging, Truman's first major decision was to use the atom bomb against Japan. It brought peace immediately. Then Truman proved himself a man of vision. He launched the Marshall Plan, which re-equipped industrial Europe after the ravages of war. And finally, he took the United States into the Korean war after North Korea had invaded the south, and ordered the Berlin airlift to beat the Soviet blockade of that city.
