  • Story Text: Two planes crashed into the twin towers of the World
    Trade Centre where thousands of people work on Tuesday
    morning, causing both towers to collapse. A "tremendous number
    of lives" were lost, New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said.


    Before the buildings collapsed, and while the planes
    were lodged near the top of each tower, bodies fell to the
    street below, eyewitnesses said.

    Later, a fleet of ambulances carried the injured north
    away from the scene, and a huge cloud of smoke hung over the
    whole of lower Manhattan more than two hours after the first
    plane hit.

    Local area hospitals made urgent appeals for blood.

    The two 110-story towers, part of the largest commercial
    complex in the world, were reduced almost to rubble. The
    towers, one of the landmarks of the New York skyline, were the
    scene of a car bomb attack in 1973, for which Ramzi Yousef was
    convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 1998.

    The city's emergency command centre was located in one of
    the World Trade Centre towers, as was the office of the Port
    Authority of New York and New Jersey, which controls the
    bridges and tunnels for the island of Manhattan and area
    airports.

    Mayor Rudolph Giuliani told New York 1 television that
    there was no warning for the attacks and a "tremendous number
    of lives" were lost. As much of lower Manhattan should be
    evacuated as soon as possible, he said.

    A person who answered the phone on the trading floor at
    interdealer-broker Cantor Fitzgerald, located near the top of
    the World Trade Center, said "We're fucking dying," when asked
    what was happening, and hung up. There was screaming and
    yelling in the background. A follow-up call was not answered.

    The World Trade Centre was completed in 1973 and cost of
    $750 million.
