Summary:In a fiery welcome to the year, an Icelandic volcano which had lain dormant for at least 7,000 years split the main island of the Westman Group almost in two as it disgorged thousands of tons of rock and molten lava onto its slopes. Five and a half thousand inhabitants of an important fishing port on the western side of the island were hurriedly evacuated to the mainland.
