- Story Text: The bodies of four British soldiers serving as peacekeepers in the former Yugoslavia who died when their helicopter crashed into the Adriatic earlier this week were flown home on Thursday (August 24).
Members of the United Nations (U.N.) peacekeeping force and the dead men's colleagues from the 24th Air Mobile Brigade stood to attention at Split airport in Croatia as the coffins were loaded aboard a British Royal Air Force (RAF) Hercules.
The four died when their Lynx helicopter crashed into the sea five miles (8 km) off the coastal town of Ploce on a training flight on Sunday (August 20).
A fifth soldier survived uninjured after swimming clear of the wreckage of the aircraft and being plucked to safety by local fishermen.
The dead were Sergeant Martin Charles Osborne, Corporal Ian David MacDonald, Air Trooper Roger Willingale and Air Trooper Graham Shane Witherstone, from the army air corps based in Wattisham, Suffolk, southern England.
The wreckage of the helicopter was salvaged on Wednesday. An investigation into the crash continues.
