Summary:It began here, on June 17 1973 at one o'clock in the morning. Most of the lights were out in the great curved building on Washington's Virginia Avenue known as the Watergate. It was then that a security guard saw a strip of plastic in a door lock and called the police. Two floors below, in the Democratic Party headquarters, they arrested five men who had been intent on bugging the phones. From this humdrum beginning, there ensued an investigation which finally deposed the President of the United States. Senator Sam Ervin was chairman of the committee which began the investigation and it was under his guidance that the whole sorry story unfolded and the furtive style of Richard Nixon's administration was exposed.
