Summary:Troops supporting Chilean President Salvadore Allende swept on the streets of Santiago on the morning of June 29 1973 to restore order after an attempted anti- government uprising. It had been led by an army unit which shelled the Presidential palace in the city, killing six people. Later, huge crowds entered Santiago to demonstrate in support of the Marxist Allende.
