- Story Text: Nearly 50,000 supporters turn out for Abdullah Abdullah election rally, one person reported crushed to death by crowds.
Nearly 50,000 supporters of Afghan presidential candidate and former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah attended a rally on Thursday (August 13), in the largest election rally to take place so far.
One person was reported killed and two others injured in the crush of people who surged towards Abdullah.
The presidential candidate met his supporters, many wearing light blue or waving light blue flags, in Mazar-I Sharif.
Afghanistan is set to hold presidential election on August 20. A spike in violence and threats by the Taliban to disrupt the polls has cast a shadow over the elections which are the second since the country overthrew the Taliban with the help of international forces.
Incumbent president Hamid Karzai is the favourite candidate and Abdullah Abdullah a second. Other contenders include Ashraf Ghani, a former UN and World Bank official and Ramzan Bashardosht, former Afghan planning minister. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
