- Story Text: About 200 people gather in central Moscow to mark the 49th birthday of journalist Anna Politkovskaya who was murdered last October.
Friends and colleagues gathered in central Moscow on Thursday (August 30) to commemorate murdered journalist Anna Politkovskaya's 49th birthday.
Some 200 people gathered at Novopushkinsky Square, carrying flowers, candles and portraits of Anna Polikovskaya.
Members of the Russian opposition and human rights groups were also in attendance.
Politkovskaya, a journalist from Novaya Gazeta newspaper, was shot dead on October 7, 2006 as she stepped out of her apartment in Moscow to get into the lift.
The contract-style shooting of Politkovskaya, a fierce critic of President Vladimir Putin, led to international condemnation, with critics saying the Kremlin was failing to protect freedom of speech.
Garry Kasparov, one of the oppposition leaders, said statements from the Russian prosecutor's office should be treated with caution, "most of them have a political subtext," he said.
Politkovskaya's birthday comes two days after Russia's Prosecutor-General Yuri Chaika reported on progress in her murder investigation. He said ten people had been detained in connection with the case. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
