Summary:San Francisco's famous cable cars celebrated their 100th birthday on August 1 1973. Many think they have outlived their usefulness, but they have become part of the tradition of one of America's most colourful cities. The first of them was driven down Nob Hill in August, 1873. Their inventor, Andrew Hallidie, was at the controls. A hundred years later, there were still 40 of them in service, carrying 13 million passengers every year.
