- Story Text: South Koreans on Friday (March 1) staged anti-Japan rallies and boycotted Japanese imports to mark the 94th anniversary of Independence Movement Day.
The day marks the first public resistance from Koreans against Japanese colonial rule between 1910 to 1945.
The anniversary came amid high anti-Japanese sentiment in the territorial dispute over islands called Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan.
Dozens of activists staged a rally in front of Seoul's Japanese embassy, slashing the Japanese military flag.
"The Japanese government should apologise its past wrongdoing in history and work together with South Korea as a partner for peace in the Northeast Asia and the world," said protest leader Choo Seon-hee.
Protesters threw eggs at a bulletin bearing photos and logos of some Japanese brands.
Save Local Stores Alliance said more than 7 million shop owners nationwide have agreed to join a movement calling for a stop to the selling or buying of Japanese goods until Tokyo apologises for its past.
"Boycotting Japanese goods is the only way to send an alarm call to the Japanese government and show our disappointment," said Oh Ho-seok, A representative of Save Local Stores Alliance (SLSA).
Japan says it has settled all its obligations and has apologized for its colonial rule, although Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government has raised doubts about whether it stands by a 1993 statement on comfort women as well as a 1995 apology by then-prime minister Tomiichi Murayama.
Seoul says there has not been sufficient apology and that reparations are not complete. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
