- Story Text: Scores of residents of Abbottabad, the Pakistani summer resort where al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in a U.S. helicopter raid, took to the streets on Friday (May 6) after prayers to protest the operation.
Carrying banners reading 'We condemn U.S intervention in Pakistan,' the protesters marched through the streets of the leafy town, chanting: "Go, America, go!"
Pakistan's main Islamist party and the biggest in the country, Jamaat-e-Islami, called for nationwide protests against the U.S raid on Pakistani soil.
"The 2nd May incident which took place in Abbottabad - Obama declared he has killed Osama bin Laden in this operation. This was a clear violation of international law," Mohammad Ibrahim Khan, a Jamaat-e-Islami senator, told the rally.
Similar rallies were also held in Lahore, Peshawar and on the outskirts of Quetta.
Predominantly Muslim Pakistan has yet to see any major backlash after U.S. special forces killed bin Laden early on Monday (May 3) not far from the capital Islamabad.
But his death has angered Islamists, with the major hardline political party of Jamaat-e-Islami calling on Pakistan's government to end its support for the U.S. war on militancy. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
