- Story Text: Hundreds of Osama bin Laden supporters took to the streets of Peshawar on Friday (May 5), as part of a nation-wide event to condemn the United States for raiding a house in Pakistan on Sunday (May 1) to kill the al Qaeda leader.
Chanting slogans, the supporters - mostly members of the Jamaat-e-Islami religious Muslim party in Pakistan, the biggest Islamist party in the country - marched through the narrow streets of the city located on the edge of the country's tribal areas where bin Laden had been hiding.
The Jammat-e-Islami says the raid on bin Laden's compound was a violation of the nation's sovereignty.
"Apart from the statements of America, the statements of the American establishment and media, they have no other proof. They should provide Pakistan and the world solid proof that Osama was present in Pakistan, in Abbottabad, and that is why they carried out the raid," said Shabbir Ahmed, Provincial General Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami.
The fact that bin Laden was found in a garrison town - his compound was not far from a major military academy - has embarrassed Pakistan, and the covert raid by U.S. commandos has angered its military.
On Thursday (May 6), the Pakistani army threatened to halt counter-terrorism cooperation with the U.S. if it conducted another, similar, unilateral strike. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
