- Story Text: Thousands of demonstrators supporting the army gathered on Friday (July 26) in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the focal point of two years of turmoil in Egypt.
Pro-army demonstrations were planned across Egypt, while backers of deposed president Mohamed Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood also announced widespread rallies, with 34 in the capital alone.
Army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi urged Egyptians to demonstrate against "violence and terrorism", while supporters of Mursi, toppled by the military on July 3, called for counter-rallies.
"People have come down today to confirm the demands of June 30th and which is an extension to January 25th," said protester Abdel Hamid Aly.
There is deepening alarm in the West over the army's move against Mursi. The country of 84 million people forms a bridge between the Middle East and North Africa and receives $1.5 billion a year in mainly military aid from Washington.
Fireworks lit up the night sky over Cairo's central Tahrir Square into the early hours of Saturday (July 27), where army supporters rallied clutching posters of Sisi in full ceremonial uniform.
In a sign of the general's rising star, many of the posters depicted him alongside Gamal Abdel Nasser and Anwar Sadat, former military officers who went on to become presidents. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
