- Story Text: Arab residents in Israel marched on Saturday (August 17) in solidarity with supporters of ousted president Mohamed Mursi, as a violent crackdown in Egypt descended into a bloodbath.
More than 2,000 people demonstrated in the largest Arab city in north of Israel, waving Egyptian flags and carrying posters with Mursi's image.
"We support democracy and with the nation that elected President Mursi, there were democratic elections so they should give a chance to the elected from the nation and he should move as elected but there was a military coup and there was disloyalty among military and this is wrong because we call for democracy so they should give Mursi a chance and they should hear the nation what they want," said Nazareth resident Mohamed Areish.
"We came here to support the legitimacy of the elected President Mohamed Mursi because he is an elected president through democratic elections," added Jamal Ekhbareh.
Among the protesters was sheikh Raed Salah leader of the northern branch of the Islamic movement in Israel.
Anger in pro-Mursi camps was directed at army commander General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who moved against Mursi last month after massive street rallies against his administration that had been dogged by accusation of partisanship and incompetence.
In Egypt, Mursi supporters have demanded the resignation of al-Sisi and the reinstatement of Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected president who is in detention and has not been seen in public since his downfall. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
