- Story Text: Dozens of anti government protesters held a rally in Mussallah area, west of capital Manama, on Friday (September 13) after a mass rally planned by the group of opposition political groups was banned by the authorities.
The ban did not stop the small rally in one of the side streets of Mussallah.
Riot police used stun grenades and tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.
The ministry of the interior had published a warning on its website and social network Twitter that the mass rally, if held, would 'hinder the interests of the people of Bahrain and risk civil peace'. The ministry said it did not endorse events that 'would have a negative impact on the peoples' safety and security' in the explanation for banning the planned protest.
Bahrain was the scene of protests, mass rallies and clashes with the police since the beginning of the Arab unrest in February 2011. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
