- Story Text: Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko urged President Viktor Yanukovich's opponents on Saturday (February 22) not to abandon their protests in central Kiev even though parliament has voted to oust him and hailed them as heroes.
Obscuring her small figure which arrived in a wheelchair the protesters took pictures of her as she approached the stage.
The crowds cheered briefly as the speaker introduced her.
She then delivered an emotional address thanking the protesters for changing history.
Tymoshenko, a former prime minister, was released earlier on Saturday from the hospital where she had been held under prison guard for much of the time since she was convicted in 2011 on charges of abuse of office. Supporters say the case was politically motivated.
"Glory to Ukraine (crowd answers: glory to the heroes) My dears, I was dreaming about seeing your eyes. I was dreaming about feeling your power which has changed everything. I was dreaming about touching each and every one of you so that I could give you my support in this moment. You are the heroes! You are the best of what Ukraine has" she told the crowd.
Describing Yanukovich's supporters and ministers as scum she also said the president should come to Independence square to face the protesters' justice.
"I was sat in prison thinking that there was no bigger happiness than to be born and to live among you because you are the best but now we have to do a couple of important things: first of all we have to bring Yanukovich and all this scum that gathered around him here in Maidan," she told the crowd She also urged her supporters not to leave the Maidan and continue the protest until elections which the parliament set today for May 25. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
