- Story Text: Ukraine's top security official told Ukrainians gathered in central Kiev on Sunday (March 23) that their country would prevail over Russia because it had the support of the international community.
Ukraine's Head of Security Council Andriy Parubiy was addressing a rally a day after Russian troops, using armoured vehicles, automatic weapons and stun grenades, seized the last military facilities under Ukrainian control in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsular that Russian President Vladimir Putin formally annexed on Friday (March 21).
"Now we should stop the occupying forces, stop the aggressor, who are not only using tanks but conducting an information war against Ukraine," Parubiy told the crowd.
"Against military power, tanks and weapons there is spiritual power and the civilised world has said 'stop' to Putin and we will prevail like we prevailed on Maidan."
"We are strong and the whole world supports us, that is why we will win. Glory to Ukraine, glory to Ukraine."
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchetyia echoed Parubiy's comments.
"And you know, there is only one external challenge: Russian aggression. But to face this challenge we have the absolute support from the whole international community and now we have a serious international coalition against this aggression and plans from Putin's presidential administration," Deshchetyia said.
Russia's seizure of Crimea, which has a majority Russian population, after the ousting of Ukraine's pro-Russian president by mass protests has triggered the worst East-West crisis since the Cold War.
The United States and the European Union have targeted some of Putin's closest political and business allies with personal sanctions and have threatened broader economic sanctions if Putin's forces encroach on other eastern or southern parts of Ukraine with big Russian-speaking populations. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
