- Story Text: Thousands of Iranians marched through Tehran on Friday (October 28, 2005) protesting against Israel at a rally entitled 'God's Day Rally'.
Gathering in the centre of the city before the march, protesters carried posters picturing a Star of David burning or wrapped in barbed wire. Massive banners hung
from nearby buildings carrying anti-zionist images and slogans.
Support for the Palestinian cause is a central policy for the Islamic Republic, which does not recognise Israel.
Its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said on Wednesday (October 26) the Islamic world "will not let its historic enemy live in its heartland".
Europe condemned Iran's president on Thursday (October 27) for saying Israel should be "wiped off the map", and said the call raised concerns about the aims of a country
the West suspects is planning to build an atomic bomb.
European Union leaders and Russia joined the United States and Canada in condemning the comments, and Iranian envoys across Europe, including Russia, were summoned to
explain the remarks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
