- Story Text: Several thousand protesters rallied in Donetsk on Thursday (April 17) calling for a united Ukraine and an end to Russian aggression.
Large numbers of interior ministry troops were deployed to secure the demonstration.
The protesters waved Ukrainian flags and held up placards calling on Putin to stop meddling in the country.
"The best alternative would of course be if Russia pulled its troops from the Ukrainian border and let us live peacefully so we can organise ourselves, said Maxim, a Donetsk resident.
"Will Russia change its mind? You know, I'd like it to, but looks like it's unlikely," said Oxana, another Donetsk resident.
"We're peaceful people. No one wants any conflict. We work. strive for something, we believe in better therefore interference will just hinder us," said another Donetsk resident, also called Oxana.
The protesters unfurled a large Ukrainian flag across the crowds and the rally ended peacefully. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
