Finland's Ari Vatanen, driving a Peugeot 205 T16, won 5,000 United States (U.S.) dollars for winning the Pharaohs' rally in Cairo on October 28. Competitors, driving for ten days on unpaved roads and desert throughout Egypt, ended the rally near the third pyramid at Giza. Absent from the final stages of the rally were Kenyans Shekar Mehta and Mike Doughty who suffered injuries after crashing in the Western desert the previous week. Italian Alessandro de Pietro won similar prize money for winning the motorcycle event riding a Cagiva Elefant.
