- Story Text: Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul attended the funeral of Erdogan's mother in Istanbul Saturday (October 8).
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's mother died in an Istanbul hospital on Friday (October 7), prompting a delay in his planned weekend trip to the Syrian border, officials from his office told Reuters.
His mother Tenzile Erdogan, who was in her 80s, had undergone an operation to remove her gall bladder and died on Friday morning, state-run Anatolian news agency reported.
Her funeral took place in Istanbul with the attendance of prominent political figures of Turkey.
Cameras captured the grief stricken prime minister crying during the funeral prayer after which, Erdogan helped by Gul shouldered the coffin to the hearse as accustomed in Muslim tradition.
The prime minister cancelled a planned visit to Syrian refugees in Turkey's Hatay province on the Syrian border on Sunday (October 9) as well as a trip to the western city of Bursa scheduled for Saturday, media reports said.
Erdogan said he will announce a package of sanctions against Syria over its violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests, after his visit to Hatay. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
