- Story Text: Shilpa Shetty's movie is the first to premiere outside of India, and may serve as a stepping stone to more work in the UK for the Bollywood actress. Shilpa Shetty was all glitz and glamour on Tuesday (May 8) as she attended the world premiere of her latest movie 'Life in a Metro'.
The Bollywood actress arrived to the Leicester Square premiere with director Anurag Basu and her sister Shamita, as well as her mother. Also present was old Big Brother acquaintance Danielle Lloyd with whom Shetty made peace following allegations of racist bullying in the house.
Shetty said she was proud that it was her film, which marked her first UK premiere, but stopped short of confirming she would move there permanently, saying only she hadn't bought a house yet and was currently jetting between India and the UK to pursue work on either side.
"I'm really overwhelmed with the reaction and I'm so so happy that it's happened and at last an Indian movie is seeing its premiere in Leicester Square. It's a very proud moment," she said, adding: "I haven't thought about it but I have to keep travelling between the UK and India because there is work in both places."
Earlier, in an interview with Reuters TV she thanked the makers of Big Brother for making her a household name in the UK and said she hoped that people would now start to see her for her acting skills. Shetty had recently made headlines for being kissed on the cheek by US actor Richard Gere during an Aids fundraiser, which sparked outraged in some.
"As far as the whole Richard episode is concerned I have said it time and time again it was completely blown out of proportion , too much has been said and done about it. That's just a minority of voices and that's the way they felt and I cannot really do anything about that . The fact is Richard and I were there for a good cause and what came out of it was really sad," she said.
When asked whether she would consider 'kissing on-screen' if that was required for the romantic lead in a Western film, she answered firmly no.
"No. I wouldn't be able to kiss on screen and maybe that's why I have to be really careful about what I want to do and what I don't want to do ...because I haven't made any compromises in the past 15 years and I have worked in this milieu and I have enjoyed it so even if I want to work in a movie that's not an Indian movie it'll have to work around what I'm comfortable with and what I can and cannot do," Shetty explained
Shetty also has plans for more business in the UK. She wants to open her own restaurant and is already planning to launch her first fragrance here in July. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
