It is amazing how little has changed." (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR, J.J. ABRAMS SAYING: "Working with the young actors in "Super 8" was a blast. They were incredibly fun to work with. They had great energy and they were funny as hell. My job was really to let them be who they are, on camera and off. - Story Text: Director J.J. Abrams was joined on the red carpet Wednesday night (June 08) by Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise for the Hollywood premiere of "Super 8."
Abrams and Spielberg actually teamed up for the film, with Spielberg taking on the role of producer on the project.
Written by Abrams, "Super 8" is a period film that takes viewers back to the summer of 1979. That's where a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth - something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.
"It is odd to be old enough to do a film about your childhood that is a legitimate period piece," said Abrams. "But, I would say that it was a lot of fun going back to that period. It is amazing how little has changed."
The film stars Kyle Chandler as Deputy Jackson Lamb and a cast of teens headed by Elle Fanning and Jole Courtney.
"Working with the young actors in "Super 8" was a blast," explained Abrams, when asked about the challenges of working with a young cast.
"They were incredibly fun to work with. They had great energy and they were funny as hell. My job was really to let them be who they are, on camera and off. So, that when I said action they were kind of continuing that dynamic, rather than shifting into acting. They were terrific."
For the young stars, the opportunity to work with Abrams and Spielberg was great.
"I remember when I went to go meet J.J. for the first time," said Elle Fanning, the younger sister of Dakota. "I didn't even know what the project was or titled or anything. I think just hearing Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams that you know it is going to be something amazing."
