- Story Text: Katie Holmes and Guillermo del Toro graced the red carpet Sunday (June 26) evening for an early screening of the upcoming horror film "Don't be Afraid of the Dark."
The film follows a young girl, Sally, as she and her father move into an old gothic home. When she begins to hear strange voices, she decides to investigate what is going on and discovers a world of horror and fantasy beyond anything she could have ever imagined.
Sally is played by Bailee Madison while her father and his girlfriend are played by Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes.
This is the first time Homes and del Toro work together. Holmes says she is a big fan of the director's work.
"Well, he has an incredible heart and I think that's in all of his stories and he has a fantasy element and a magic to his work and you can get very connected," said Holmes.
For del Toro, producer and co-writer, it's all about creating new and unforeseen worlds while experimenting with the fine line between fairy tales and nightmares. His goal is to create a scary new experience for his audience.
"If they're going to be scared then they should come and see it because that's what it's all about. Its a horror movie," says del Toro, whose 2006 Academy Award winning film "Pan's Labyrinth" also contained a hidden fantasy world.
"Don't be Afraid of the Dark" is directed by newcomer Troy Nixey. Nixey has previously released one short film and worked on comic book design for 17 years. For Nixey, the level of trust given to him by Guillermo del Toro was confidence-building for him.
"It's incredible because he was really amazing. He put himself out there for me when I needed him and said, 'call me when you need me but don't call me when you don't.' So, just to have that level of respect was great. It just gives you that confidence to be able to do what you need to do," says Nixey.
Accompanying del Toro on his return to the Hollywood big screen since "Pan's Labyrinth" was "Hellboy" actor Ron Perlman.
