- Story Text: Adrien Brody arrived on the black carpet Wednesday night (June 02) for the Hollywood premiere of the science fiction horror film, "Splice." The screening took place at the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre.
In the film, Brody plays Clive, a genetic engineer who specializes in splicing DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Clive wants to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds the research forbids it, Clive and his partner Elsa (Sarah Polley) secretly take the experimentation underground. The result is Dren, a creature of uncommon intelligence but one who threatens to become Clive's worst nightmare.
The Oscar winning actor told Reuters he prepped hard for the role of the "mad scientist."
"I did quite a bit of research to better understand the basic genetic research and be very familiar with the equipment my character is using in the film," said Brody.
Brody, who earned a Best Actor Academy award for his role in "The Pianist," added that while "Splice" is a horror film, the script and characters are strong.
"Recreate genetic structures on a cellular level, alter life is a reality," explained Brody. "It is fascinating so even though this is science fiction it is one of those things that parallels where we are in the world today."
Director Vincenzo Chaneac believed getting both Brody and actress Sarah Polley on board was key to the films success.
"It was essential to ge the right actors because while this is a horror film, it is an emotional one. The character relationships are quite complex. I needed people like Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley to pull this off."
"Iron Man" superhero Robert Downey Jr. was among the stars who showed up for the premiere.
