- Story Text: The arrival of stars Johnny Depp and Christian Bale drew screams from the fans who lined the red carpet Tuesday night (June 23, 2009) for the world premiere of the period gangster film, "Public Enemies."
Directed by Michael Mann, the action-thriller tells the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) -- the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number-one target of J. Edgar Hoover's fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), and a folk hero to much of the public.
For Christian Bale, the chance to work with director Michael Mann on the project is something the "Batman" star called rewarding.
"He's phenomenal, it is one of the most satisfying experiences I've had making a movie," explained Bale. "We filmed at so many of the actual locations that you can't help but feel that there are ghosts present working in that environment. He has such a wonderful ability and he is so articulate to leave no stone unturned that the FBI would do great to have him on their payroll."
Besides the all star cast, that also includes Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard, the film has generated a buzz among fans for its close attention to details of the story and the era in which it came out of.
The film is among the titles screening at this year's Los Angeles Film Festival.
