- Story Text: Put your Manolos on - the ladies are back! From the movie set to the film's Tokyo premiere, the glamorous gals of "Sex and the City 2" stepped out on the red carpet in their best shoes.
An ocean of screaming Sex and the City fans gathered at the premiere on Tuesday (June 1) as they watched Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and director Michael Patrick King strut the red carpet.
The foursome signed autographs and shook hands with their Japanese fans while walking in the spotlight.
Nixon, who portrays lawyer Miranda Hobbes, says she's been overwhelmed by the reaction of her fans during the premiere in New York, London and Tokyo.
"It's so wonderful because when we started, we were just a show about women in New York and we didn't know if anybody even in other parts of America would relate to it," Nixon told Reuters. "But it seems that women all over the world can relate so it is exciting to have our American premiere, but it's even more exciting in a certain way to go across the world and see how it has touched women and in all different countries."
"Sex and the City 2" is the follow-up to the 2008 blockbuster, which pulled in more than 415 million U.S. dollars world-wide and was inspired by the popular series based on the writings of Candace Bushnell.
The sequel, distributed by Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros, sees a return to celebrating the friendship of the four main characters -- Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha -- who reflect on marriage and motherhood, leaving behind their families for an unlikely extravagant holiday in Abu Dhabi, in scenes which were actually shot in Morocco.
Cattrall - who plays publicist Samantha Jones - says Morocco was fun, but another adventure would be nice if there's to be another sequel in the future.
"China, you know, would be nice, Thailand, Korea, Japan? I think it would be really interesting to give more of an Eastern feel to Sex and the City and to see the girls in a different environment," said Cattrall. "Unfortunately, I don't have any say in that. I show up when they say we're ready to make the film so we'll see what happens."
Davis, known as Charlotte York Goldenblatt, agrees with Cattrall saying that another girls night out is much needed.
Asked if she is ready for another sequel, she replied: "I don't have to worry about those things, it's Michael Patrick's job and I'm glad because it's a lot of pressure, but I will say we love being here!", adding: "It'd be really fun, it'll be really fun to come to Asia maybe we can come to Tokyo and do some shopping, the girls!"
In the film, the four pals take an all-expenses luxury trip to Abu Dhabi courtesy of Samantha, and reflect on who they are, where they've been, and their future.
The Arab sojourn takes an unexpected turn when Samantha gets in hot water for kissing in public.
The movie jokes about women in burqas and has gossip about whether a Middle Eastern butler is gay.
But neither Parker, nor her co-stars were going to elaborate on another film.
"Oh geez I have no idea, we haven't even discussed it yet. We're just enjoying getting this movie out and meeting the audience that we haven't had the chance to meet thus far and just we're really relishing this particular time," Parker, who reprises her role as New York columnist Carrie Bradshaw, told Reuters.
The 45-year-old added that she is excited to finally be with her family after the world tour.
"I have the whole summer with them, which is wonderful so it'll be great. I'll make up for the lost time," the mother of a six-year-old son and twin daughters said.
Supporting characters from the TV series, such as Carrie's former boyfriend Aidan, appear in the sequel, and superstars including Liza Minnelli and Miley Cyrus make cameo appearances.
And, of course, on display are many glamorous outfits that are sure to tantalize women everywhere who love fashion.
The film's wardrobe budget is a reportedly 10 million U.S. dollars.
Cast members and trend experts said the influence of the franchise on pop culture has been nothing short of incredible since the groundbreaking TV series first aired in 1998.
The film, which opened in theatres across the U.S. last week, will be released on June 4 in Japan. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
