- Story Text: It was a family affair at the Los Angeles premiere of "Surveillance," a thriller that marks the return of director Jennifer Lynch to the silver screen. The filmmaker was joined by her famous father David Lynch and her teenage daughter at the Landmark Theater Monday night (June 15, 2009).
The film stars Julia Ormond and Bill Pullman with David Lynch acting as the executive producer.
"Surveillance" tells the story of Federal Officers Elizabeth Anderson (Julia Ormond) and Sam Hallaway (Bill Pullman) who are called in to help solve a roadside rampage, where they are faced with having three sets of stories to figure out and a string of vicious murders to consider.
One zealot cop, a strung out junkie and an eight year old girl all are witnesses, but as the Feds begin to expose the fragile little details each witness conceals so carefully with a well practiced lie, they soon discover that uncovering 'the truth' can come at a very big cost.
The film is a comeback for Lynch, who left the business after filming the controversial, "Boxing Helena," a project that was beset by cast changes, lawsuits and poor reviews. She told Reuters, that after enjoying her time raising her daughter, "Surveillance" just felt right.
"This story I just fell in love with writing and the opportunity to work with the cast was just too much refuse," said Lynch.
She added that while she enjoyed working with her dad, they had some creative differences.
"I think he challenged me as any good father or friend would do. I wrote another ending but I didn't believe in it. Although I shot both endings, the other ending is available on the dvd. I stuck with the original ending. The gift is that when he saw the film he said, I see why you chose that."
David Lynch, best known as the director of "The Elephant Man," "Blue Velvet," refuses to be drawn into comparisons with his daughter.
"So Jennifer has her voice, I got my voice and Jack down the road has his voice," Lynch told Reuters. "It is a beautiful thing to catch ideas and translate them into cinema through your own machine."
