- Story Text: Hollywood stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher walked the red carpet Tuesday (January 11) in support of their new film "No Strings Attached," in which the pair play a set of friends who complicate things by adding romance to the mix. Portman, who recently announced her pregnancy and engagement to ballet dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millipied, is enjoying her status as one of the most talked about actresses in Hollywood as awards season comes into full swing. She is nominated for a Golden Globe award for best actress for her role in psychosexual thriller "Black Swan," and is widely considered a front runner for the Oscar this year.
Portman took the chance to comment on the upswing she is enjoying in her personal life.
"I feel so, so, so lucky and I'm trying to take it all in and enjoy everything, and it definitely makes me feel calmer about everything to really be in such a lucky place in my personal life," says Portman.
Although Portman isn't due to give birth for some time, she isn't getting any advice from her co-star Ashton Kutcher, who came to the premiere with his wife, Demi Moore, whose children Kutcher has helped raise.
"None," says Kutcher, when asked if he has offered Portman any parenting advice. "I have no idea about infants, like I started with eight year olds, so, from eight to like 21, I'm good, I've got it on lockdown," he adds.
In "No Strings Attached," Portman and Kutcher star as Emma and Adam, long time friends figuring out that maintaining a strictly sexual relationship is not as easy as it sounds.
Emma is a doctor who works long shifts and needs to be in a relationship that doesn't require flowers or fighting or any expectations. After unexpectedly waking up in bed together one morning, Adam and Emma attempt to save their friendship and agree to remain friends with a physical relationship but without falling in love. However, both friends soon discover that not falling in love is the hardest thing they ever had to do.
Portman signed on to the romantic comedy because she liked the way it reversed the typical male/female relationships found in so many Hollywood films. In "No Strings Attached," it is Portman's character, who is more interested in maintaining a strictly sexual, non-romantic relationship, not the other way around.
"I love romantic comedies, but I am tired of seeing just girls who want to get married all the time and that's all they're interested in," says Portman. "I think there's such a wider variety of how women conduct their lives and what they want, and to see a wider range of how females behave is good for all of us, and funnier when it's new."
For Kutcher, being in a "no strings attached" relationship is overrated.
"You know, I think it's an arrangement you can have in a relationship for a little while but I think eventually you come up against a cliff, and you either have to jump off or you run back the other way," says Kutcher.
"No Strings Attached" is directed by "Ghostbusters" creator Ivan Reitman. It also stars actors Kevin Kline, Cary Elwes, and Chris Bridges, better known as rapper Ludacris.
