The film is based on the life of boxer "Irish" Micky Ward and focuses on his return to boxing and winning the IBF Light Welterweight Championship after years away from the ring working as a street paver. The relationship of the brothers is one of the focal points of the film. Micky leaves his brother behind to train with inspiration from his then-girlfriend-now-wife Charlene, who is played by Amy Adams.
Adams said she couldn't wait to be a part of the film with once she knew of the cast.
"It was a lot about the relationship, but it also had a lot to do with not only the material. But it had a lot to do with David and Mark and Christian and Melissa," explained Adams.
