- Story Text: A fully restored version of the legendary Fritz Lang silent film "Metropolis" was shown for the first time on Friday (February 12) at the 60th Berlin Film Festival.
The new version of the 1927 film containing more than 30 minutes of previously unseen footage will had its world premiere at Friedrichstadt Palace and was displayed live and open air at the Berlin Brandenburg Gate.
Before the film an art installation entitled "The Curtain" was presented in front of the Berlin landmark. The work of Korean-American artist Christina Kim is a 300 square metre symbolic theatre curtain made of hundreds of Berlinale memorabilia paying tribute to the festival's 60 years of history.
The new version of "Metropolis" was reconstructed by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Foundation and was accompanied live by the Berlin Rundfunk-Sinfonie Orchestra directed by conductor Frank Strobel who played the music based on the original score by Gottfried Huppertz.
At the Old Opera House in Frankfurt a simultaneous premiere of the film took place.
Large parts of the film were thought to be lost for decades. But a sensational discovery of a 16-millimetre negative print of the original in Buenos Aires in 2008 made the latest restoration possible. Metropolis is a true classic of film history having inspired generations of film-makers through its set-design and visionary pictures which make it a cutting-edge for modern science fiction movies. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
