- Story Text: "Girl power" ruled on the red carpet as stars Meg Ryan and Annette Bening arrived for the Hollywood premiere of their latest film "The Women," which features an all female cast.
The film which premiered Thursday night (September 04, 2008) at the Mann Village Theater in Westwood, is a modern day remake of George Cukor's 1939 film and Clare Boothe Luce's 1936 stage play of the same name. "The Women" tells the story of a busy subsection of Manhattan society where the publishing, fashion and finance industries intersect.
At the center of the tale is Mary Haines (Meg Ryan), a thoroughly modern woman suddenly confronted with an age old dilemma: a cheating husband.
The ladies in her life swiftly rally to Mary's side, led by her best friend, Sylvie Dowler, a high powered magazine editor played by Annette Bening. Things change, though, when Sylvie betrays Mary and the whole group is shaken to the core, facing a breakup of a friendship.
Other stars of "The Women" who turned out for the premiere were Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett Smith, Candice Bergen and Debi Mazar.
"More than anything I am proud to be part of the political statement we are making," explained the films co-star Debra Messing on the films all female cast. "That is you can make a very successful and fun film with women as their leads."
"There are much fewer hard parts now than there used to be. I think this movie shows that," added veteran actress Candice Bergen.
The cast was also quick to weigh in on the recent nomination of Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
"I think she sounds like a really fantastically exciting women," said Debi Mazar on Palin's surprise nomination. "We are the same age, she has five children, she has a daughter who is having a baby, which is amazing. My mother had me at 15. I think her plate is really full and she has been given a great opportunity that is shocking. We have completely opposite political views but I think from her she is very lucky and I congradulate her. Beyond that, that is what I have to say about Sarah Palin."
