But, no, I was a huge fan. 'El Mariachi' is a masterpiece. And 'Sin City' changed the way movies look forever, so. I was a huge admirer of his. And the fact that he even knew to, would even consider me, I was happy about. So, I was, you know, thrilled to work with him." He has like made kid's dreams come true. Because I'm sure every kid dreams to be a spy and getting to have awesome gadgets, and getting to kick some bad guy butt. I think every kid dreams that, because I for sure did." We went to the best people who create smells for like magazines. Like when you smell a cologne or a detergent in a magazine, you rub it and a smell comes up. And, it was really just to connect the kids to the spy kids on the screen, because they're experiencing the same things at the same time. So it really adds another dimension to the movie." - Story Text: Director Robert Rodriguez hit the red carpet on Sunday (July 31, 2011) for the Los Angeles premiere of his newest film, "Spy Kids: All The Time In The World in 4D." Jessica Alba, Jeremy Piven, Joel McHale and Danny Trejo were among the more well-known cast members to join him on the red carpet. Newcomers Rowan Blanchard and Mason Cook, the latest duo to play the young leads, also posed for photos and talked to the media gathered outside the theatre ahead of the mid-day screening.
"Spy Kids 4D" is the fourth installment of a popular franchise about child super heroes working undercover to solve mysteries and save the world from an assortment of villains. In this movie Alba plays a retired spy-turned-mom who gets called back into action when a new global threat arises. The adventure begins to unfold when her unsuspecting twin stepchildren, portrayed by Blanchard and Cook, get pulled into the fast-paced action.
Alba talked about why she was interested in making the film.
"I like that my daughter can see this movie," explained the 30-year-old actress. "Most of my work is totally inappropriate. So it's fun to make a movie that I know that she can enjoy."
Alba has a three-year-old daughter named Honor and is currently pregnant with a second child.
Rodriguez noted he had reasons similar to Alba for wanting to make movies for his popular "Spy Kids" franchise.
"I love this kind of family film because they're really action-oriented, kind of stuff that I like. A lot of humor. I'm from a family of ten kids. I've got five kids of my own. So, those kind of family stories, and the inspiration that you get, they don't fit in a 'Machete' or a 'Sin City.' And this is a great place to go and have those ideas come to life."
The 43-year-old filmmaker shared why he often turns to the same actors and actresses to cast in his motion pictures.
"I sometimes will work with somebody like in the adult arena, like with Jessica -- 'Sin City.' 'Machete.' But I also know her personally as a mom. And I was like 'You're not getting any mom roles. I'll put you as a really cool mom in a 'Spy Kids' movie. And you have to know the actor more and know more what they can offer. So, I tend to use the same actors in different types of roles in each movie, just because you get a familiarity with them and you realize they have so much more potential than what they're being used for."
Actor Jeremy Piven praised Rodriguez for his directing style.
"He's one of those directors who loves actors," said Piven, 46. "And, he creates an atmosphere in which you can just play. And that's the best way to work. Imagination is king. You try anything. And, I had more fun on this set than anything I've ever done in my life. And, I never would have thought that."
Cook and Blanchard also expressed their appreciation for the man who helmed their first big movie.
"If you could describe him, I would describe him as a kid in a grown man's body," said Cook, 11. "He has like made kid's dreams come true. Because I'm sure every kid dreams to be a spy and getting to have awesome gadgets, and getting to kick some bad guy butt. I think every kid dreams that, because I for sure did."
"He's an inspiration to all of us I think," smiled 9-year-old Blanchard. "He's just so amazing. He really discovered me, and I love him. His mind, there's no limit to his imagination."
Rodriguez added a new element to make the film officially a "4D" feature: Scent. He is calling the feature "Aroma-Scope." He explained the steps he took to add various smells to the film-going experience.
"It was not that difficult. We went to the best people who create smells for like magazines. Like when you smell a cologne or a detergent in a magazine, you rub it and a smell comes up. And, it was really just to connect the kids to the spy kids on the screen, because they're experiencing the same things at the same time. So it really adds another dimension to the movie."
In addition to the 3D on-screen visuals, audience members will be given a "smell card" with 8 different areas to scratch and sniff based upon cues from the movie.
