- Story Text: After his latest star turn as a chameleon in the animated Western "Rango," you could make the argument that there isn't a role that star Johnny Depp can't play well. The actor arrived on the red carpet Monday night (February 14) for the Los Angeles premiere of the animated Western.
Directed by Gore Verbinski, "Rango" tells the story of a pet chameleon that faces a major identity crisis. When Rango, voiced by Johnny Depp, accidentally winds up in the Wild West, the less than courageous Lizard is forced to play a hero, a role that in the past he only pretended to be.
"Ultimately, it is interesting to see people decide what is the real treasure in life, what is really worth it and what is it that we really need," explained Depp, who spent a lot of his time at the premiere meeting his fans who lined up outside the Regency Theater.
"Is it gold, is it oil, is it money, diamonds, whatever. Or is it water, air and we protect ourselves and we live that way," he said.
Verbinski, who directed Depp in "The Pirates of the Caribbean" films, said there is a lot of Depp in Rango.
"This movie was a chameleon with an identity crisis," Verbinski said. "This movie is more Johnny than any movie he has done. Our protagonist is an actor that can play any part but doesn't know who he is."
"Rango" also stars Isla Fisher and Abigail Breslin.
"Rango" opens on March 4. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
