- Story Text: Matt Damon and the cast of the latest "Bourne" film walk the red carpet in Berlin.
It's been the August smash hit at the North American box office grossing over 70 million U.S. dollars at its opening weekend. 'The Bourne Ultimatum' , the last in the espionage series has already earned rave reviews and cast and director are hoping that the American success will spill over into the European market.
Matt Damon, who is back as the CIA hit-man who suffers from amnesia, told Reuters at the premiere in Berlin on Tuesday (August 21) that acting as Jason Bourne has become second nature to him while filming: "I am very much a part of the whole process so I still see where we were that day, what we were trying to accomplish, what we got, what we didn't get. It is hard to be objective about a movie that you worked that closely on."
All eyes and cameras were trained on Damon and his movie co-star Julia Stiles, who clearly enjoyed the balmy summer evening while they posed for pictures on the red carpet at Potsdamer Platz.
Julia Stiles told Reuters about the change in her character from the first movies: "For me it was a lot different making the third one because my character gets to get out of the office and onto the streets and running around and I was involved in a lot more of the action. I think the best part for me was the fact that Nicky has finally decided to be active about her life. She takes control. She decides that she doesn't want to be involved in the CIA anymore and so she defects, which means that you risk your life. But it is more powerful than in the first two because in the first two she was kind of a victim of circumstance."
Matt Damon's wife, Luciana Barroso, also attended the premiere. The movie is the third in the "Bourne" trilogy launched five years ago.
The first two films were "The Bourne Identity" and "The Bourne Supremacy."
The movie is dominated by heart-pounding chase scenes that take place in Moscow, Paris, Turin, Italy, London, Madrid, Tangiers, Morocco, and New York. These action-packed pursuits weave their way through a number of international urban sprawls with Jason Bourne hot on the trail of himself.
That might be the genius of the series: A James Bond-like character who can escape any trap and outsmart any villain, but all in a quest for his own identity. Bourne is not out to save the world. He just wants to know his real name.
Damon is an Academy Award-winning screenwriter and actor. He last appeared in "The Departed" directed by Martin Scorsese. The film won Best Picture at the 2007 Oscars and also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg. Damon also recently starred in Robert DeNiro's dramatic thriller "The Good Shepherd," with DeNiro and Angelina Jolie.
The versatile 36-year-old actor made his first feature film debut in 1988 in a small role in the well-received "Mystic Pizza," also starring the then unknown Julia Roberts. (Damon had one line.) In 1998, he won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay with longtime friend Affleck for the critically-acclaimed drama "Good Will Hunting."
