- Story Text: Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver and other stars of the movie "Conviction" came out to the Samuel Goldwyn theater in Beverly Hills Tuesday night (October 5) for the film's premiere.
The movie is the true story of Betty Ann Waters' 18 year quest to exonerate her brother of a crime he didn't commit. Ms. Waters was an unemployed single mother when her brother Kenny was convicted of murder in 1982. To prove her brother's innocence, Betty Ann Waters completed a high school equivalency program, then went on to get a bachelor's and then finally a law degree.
Hilary Swank, who stars at Betty Ann Waters, said the story is incredible.
"It's hard to believe that something like this could really happen. You know, it's astonishing that someone who didn't commit a crime can to prison for such a long amount of time and then it's astonishing that someone can have so much unconditional love for another person to spend their life helping them to be free."
Many of the stars of the movie share the feelings of Betty Ann Waters, who attended the premiere.
"I hope that people open their eyes to the criminal justice system and that they understand that not everyone in prison are guilty and they should be. They should know only guilty people should be in, not the innocent," Waters said.
Minnie Driver, who plays Abra Rice, a friend of Betty Ann Waters, talked about the potential people have when motivated.
"I think about what they perceive as their limitations because we, as Betty Ann proves, you can do a whole lot more than you ever possibly thought was possible. She went from having not even a general equivalency to becoming a lawyer to exonerating her brother. We can do a lot more as people then we think."
Hilary Swank added, "To me, I hope that they leave feeling what a great love story this was. You know, to hold the ones that they hold dear a little bit closer. You never know what's going to happen tomorrow. And I think, ultimately, I think that's all life's about really - is being there for your family."
Renowned attorney, Barry Scheck, who helped Betty Ann Waters set her brother Kenny free, attended the premiere. Seven other men Scheck's "Innocence Project" exonerated for crimes they didn't commit also attended. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
