- Story Text: Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher premiere their latest film "What Happens in Vegas," about the aftermath of a drunken mistake.
Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher team up in "What Happens in Vegas," and joined co-stars at the film's red carpet premiere in Los Angeles. Playing on the popular expression "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas," the film tells the story of an odd couple who find themselves betrothed to one another after a night of heavy drinking. Talking about their decisions to do the movie, the charismatic listed working with each other as an incentive.
"Ashton Kutcher, actually, honestly," says Cameron Diaz.
"I read the script and I said, OK, after that, it wasn't an absolute that he was doing the movie, but then I said 'well, now that you told me he might be doing the movie, I won't do it unless he does do the movie'."
Adds Ashton Kutcher, "I got the script, and they said 'what do you need to do this movie?' And I looked at the script and I loved it, and I thought it was really funny and I said 'give me a great co-star and a great director, and they said 'we got Cameron Diaz is interested in doing the movie,' and I said 'I'm in,' that was it."
In "What Happens in Vegas," Diaz plays a stiff commodities trader from New York City who meets a charismatic party guy played by Ashton Kutcher. After what should have been just a fun night on the town, the two wake up hungover the next morning to realize they have nothing in common but a marriage license. Matters are made worse when the contentious couple wins 3 million dollars on a slot machine, but are forced by a judge to stay married for six months before the jackpot can be split, forcing the two to pay for their marriage mistake. During filming, Diaz and Kutcher made sure to experience a night similar to the pivotal one in the film, although without the marriage license.
"Cameron and I slipped out at an odd hour," says Kutcher, "I won a lot of money at those craps tables, do you remember that? I sort of remember that. We had one good evening, I paid for it the next day."
Adds Diaz, "There were blackjack tables. We paid for it in a lot of ways."
Parts of the film's production took place in Las Vegas, but director Tom Vaughan made sure to keep the cast and crew busy by shooting at night, so they wouldn't be partied out by the next day. He also made sure to keep the shoots in Vegas scheduled towards the end of the production.
"Well, the whole shoot was about forty-six days, and about ten of those were in Vegas, but I deliberately, knowing what I know about film crews and movie stars, I decided that we should shoot the Vegas bit last," says director Tom Vaughan.
This is the first public appearance for Diaz since her father, 58 year old Emilio Diaz, died from pneumonia on April 15. Diaz credits a sense of humor and support from family and friends with helping her cope with his death.
"Well, I'm just happy to be able to bring a film like this to the world because I know how important it is to laugh and to lose yourself for a period of time, and I screened the film for my family this last weekend and we had a wonderful laugh, and it just reaffirmed that this is why I make these films, so that people in times, when they just need to go and have a good time, they can just go and have a good time," says Diaz.
