"Thor," the latest bigger-than-life Marvel comic book character looking to test their action adventure super powers on the silver screen had its Hollywood premiere Monday night (May 02) at the famed El Capitan Theater, where fans lined up hoping to catch a glimpse of stars Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and Rene Russo.
Directed by Kenneth Branagh, "Thor" stars Hemsworth as the iconic character, reinvented by legendary writer Stan Lee as a Marvel comics superhero in 1960s.
The film focuses on sibling rivalry theme as Thor and his scheming brother, compete for the throne of Asgard, handed down by their king and father, Odin, played by Academy Award winning actor Anthony Hopkins.
"I've never done this sort of movie before, but I always wanted to work with Ken Branagh," explained Hopkins. "He offered me the part and he was a great inspiration to work with. One of the best directors I've worked with in many years."
For Branagh, a name not often associated with mega budget, action/fantasy films, the chance to create "Thor" provided an exciting new challenge.
"I think everyone was very excited to build something new and for me never having to answer questions about a remake. Everybody was like, 'Hey new super hero world we can create and I think everybody was excited to be part of it,'" said Branagh.
The film, which also stars Oscar winner Natalie Portman, is expected to do very well at the box office, a fact that isn't lost on up-and-coming star Chris Hemsworth.
"It's exciting, absolutely," said Hemsworth.
"I came across to the states five years ago and was trying to work in this business. I was busy for a while and then spent 8 or 9 months not working. I am happy to be working for the moment and really appreciative all the attention the film is getting. And I couldn't be asking for anything more."
