- Story Text: With the new musical film "Nine" earning five nominations for the 2010 Golden Globes awards earlier on Tuesday (December 15), the New York premiere of the star-studded movie was more of a party.
The film's co-stars, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Dame Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Marion Cotillard, and Daniel Day Lewis were all on hand for the red carpet event and were jubilant at the prospect that the film has been recognized with the nominations. Also attending the premiere were Madonna, Donald Trump, Singer Fergie, and Goldie Hawn, actress and mother of Hudson.
"We were thrilled, I mean, this kind of movie needs that support because it's a different movie, and so for more musicals to be made, this is a really good sign," says Kidman.
"I think it's very, very good news for all of us, and for Harvey, who believed in it all, and put money in it," says Dame Judi Dench, of Harvey Weinstein, one of the film's executive producers.
"Nine" received five Golden Globes nominations, including best musical or comedy. Daniel Day-Lewis and Marion Cotillard, received nods for actor and actress in a musical or comedy, respectively, and Penelope Cruz landed a nod in the supporting actress group. "Nine" also received a nomination for best song. The film comes behind the George Clooney movie "Up in the Air," which landed six Golden Globe Nominations.
For pop singer Fergie, who shows her film acting talents opposite Academy Award winners Kidman, Cotillard, Dench, Cruz, and Sophia Loren in "Nine," the Golden Globes announcement is easily summed up:
"What do you think I feel? Excited," says Fergie, "I'm just happy I get to go, and I have a reason to be there, and you know what, I am so proud of this cast and this director."
"Nine" was originally a 1982 Broadway musical. It was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won five, including the coveted Best Musical. The filmed version was helmed by director Rob Marshall, best known for directing another adaptation of a Broadway musical, the popular "Chicago," which netted an Oscar for Best Picture in 2002.
The vibrant and provocative motion picture "Nine" centers around the fictional character of world-famous film director Guido Contini, played by Daniel Day-Lewis.
The film "Nine" marks the first time that actresses Penelope Cruz and Kate Hudson both sang for movie roles.
"Well, I've never sung before, it was my first time, so I had to train for many months with a great singing teacher," says Penelope Cruz. "And then I had to work on my Italian accent because it was the first time I play an Italian but speaking English, so I had a lot to worry about."
"It was never something I was shy about, I've just never had the confidence to do it publicly or have the forum to be able to express that, and Rob kind of pushed me out, he introduced me to what that feels like, to be on the stage and singing," says Hudson.
Hudson's mother, Goldie Hawn was thrilled to have her daughter follow in her footsteps once more.
"Katie's been dancing all her life, and singing well before she was acting, so for me, I was a dancer, for me to see this now happening, it's emotional, it's exciting, and it also gives us even more to share."
"Nine" will open across North America in limited release on December 18 and expand into full release on Christmas Day (December 25.) The Golden Globes, given out on Jan. 17 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are among the most-watched awards and a key indicator of which movies will compete for the world's top film honors, the Oscars, in March. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
