- Story Text: Actor Johnny Depp stepped out on the red carpet to promote his latest film, "The Rum Diary," at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on Thursday. Dressed in a dark suit with his trademark dark glasses, Depp posed with his co-stars Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart and Giovanni Ribisi at the star-studded premiere.
Based on Hunter S. Thompson's debut novel, "The Rum Diary" is the story of journalist Paul Kemp's chaotic adventures on the rum-soaked island of Puerto Rico. Depp, who counts Thompson among his best friends, felt that the film represented another slice of the late author's legacy.
"Well, it's another sliver, it's another slice of the mad times of Hunter S. Thompson, you know, circa 1959, 1960, I think there's a lot of gravity to the film and I think there's a levity to the film, you know, just like Hunter."
The "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor also takes a producing role in "The Rum Diary," and found that the biggest challenge of bringing the novel to the big screen was staying true to the trademark vernacular of Hunter S. Thompson.
"Staying in the vernacular of Hunter, but I thought Bruce Robinson was so so brilliant in his approach to the book and his approach to the film, and you know, he was exactly our dream, Bruce, for Hunter and I, way back when."
Actress Amber Heard, who plays the film's sultry love-interest, found the film to be a warm portrayal of the author's work.
"You know, there's so much heart in this story, it's Hunter pre-Gonzo, it's about truth and beauty and courage in the light of the opposite of those things, it's a wonderful story."
Giovanni Ribisi, who previously acted alongside Depp in "Public Enemies," found himself once again paired with the actor in the role of raging alcoholic Moberg.
"I didn't perform the character, I excreted the character in the most violent way. That was like, it was interesting because it was sort of trying to break down, you know, I've been doing acting for a while, it sort of break downs all the habits and the things that I depended on as an actor."
And with rum in the title of the film, it appeared that the cast had as much fun off set as they did filming, although Eckhart, who plays the conniving Sanderson, refused to divulge details of what went on behind the scenes in Puerto Rico.
"That's confidential. We managed to make a movie in between."
